This Hawaiian surfer proved to be the surprise package at the 2008 World Longboard Championships, beating the experienced Chelsea Williams (Aus) and title holder Jennifer Smith (USA) to emerge victorious. Then a business student in Utah, the recently married Joy (previously known by her maiden name, Magelssen) crept up on the favourites with a quietly flawless performance, ultimately reaching the final of the Roxy Jam where she eventually overtook her rival Williams on the very last wave, just seconds from the end of the series. It was a real bombshell that saw her squeeze past into first place with the best score of the entire event, and won her the title of World Champion at the age of 22! A genuine specialist of the longboard, which she's been riding all her life with her three sisters, Mrs Monahan's previous wins included a US Championship in 2004 and a victory in the prestigious Australian Noosa Festival in 2005. This time, she'll be arriving in France with the favourite's tag and all the extra pressure that comes with it.
